When I was teaching more, I saw myself as a guide for students on a wonderful journey discovering the English language in writing and reading. I would take my students beyond the tourist hot spots and into the hole-in-the-wall cafes, street markets, and sometimes unsafe neighborhoods, where they could develop more than just grammar, spelling, punctuation, and the required writing skills, but also acquire a love of language. Those days are almost gone. I’m still walking on the razor’s edge of full-time retirement (full-time writing). We will see.
